Reiki is an amazing holistic healing approach to support your autoimmune health.
Autoimmune disease is a condition in which your immune system thinks healthy cells are foreign and therefore attacks those healthy cells.
Holistic approaches, like Reiki, are becoming increasingly popular to support physical and emotional health and well-being.
In this post, I’ll share how Reiki can provide relief and complement traditional treatments of autoimmune diseases.
Understanding Autoimmune Diseases and Their Impact
There are over 100 different autoimmune conditions that affect the skin, nervous system, digestive system, hormones, and blood.
Here are some common types:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Lupus
- Celiac
- Psoriasis
- Type I Diabetes
- Multiple Sclerosis
With these different types of autoimmune diseases, your immune system is incorrectly detecting that the cells in the blood, skin, joints, muscles, or organs are foreign. It then, in turn, produces proteins called autoantibodies to attack these cells.
While it doesn’t appear that experts have found a cause for autoimmune diseases there could be some factors that may play a role like:
- Environment
- Genetics
- Nutrition
- Ethnicity
Depending on the type of autoimmune disease, symptons can vary. However, common symptoms are fatigue, inflammation, confusion, dizziness, numbness, and pain.
Because these symptoms, or flare-ups, can cause much emotional, mental, and physical stress (which exacerbates the symptoms) it’s important to be able manage them as best as possible.
What is Reiki? An Overview
Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century.
It is based on the belief that a “universal life force energy” flows through all living things, and that disruptions or blockages in this energy can lead to physical, emotional, or spiritual imbalances.
This Universal Life Force Energy is channeled through a practitioner’s hands where the healing energy is then transferred to you.
Sessions can be done in person or over distance. Distance Reiki works the same as in-person Reiki as energy healing knows no space or time.
The goal is to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support the body’s natural healing processes. Reiki is often used as a complementary therapy in holistic wellness.
For more information on how Reiki can work with your energy system you can read this blog post about it.
How Reiki Can Support Autoimmune Health
Stress can get stuck in our body.
Now this can be current stress or stress from when you were a child (emotional stress).
Both can cause a whole host of issues.
And weakening of the immune system is definitely one of them!
Reiki can help reduce your stress levels by relaxing your nervous system and body.
Therefore, by reducing stress it can lessen symptom flares and aid in overall immune function.
Also, by getting you back into emotional balance Reiki can improve the body’s response to inflammation and pain.
You can further read an article on Reiki being used in clinical settings where it’s increasingly being used as an alternative approach for healing along with traditional treatments.
Integrating Reiki into an Autoimmune Wellness Routine
Reiki works well alongside traditional, medical treatments. Meaning, it does not interfere with any medication or therapy you are currently taking.
This makes it a perfect holistic approach to autoimmune health.
As your starting out on your healing journey, I would recommend starting with a series of sessions every few weeks for the first few months.
This way your body is getting continual healing energy and not going back to the starting line each session.
