Have you heard of the word “chakra” before? Maybe you have and have said to yourself, “What are chakras, anyway?”  If you’re at all curious, then this blog post is for you!

As a Reiki Master Practitioner, I have a very good understanding of Chakras and Energy Healing. They’re, literally, what I work with! Now, I may have lost you because you don’t know what Reiki is. Stay with me. I’ll break it all down for you in this post.

As living beings, our bodies are made of energy. You may have heard of electrical synapses in the brain. Energy. So, imagine us as having energy freeways throughout our body and points along those freeways called Chakras.

The word Chakra means energy wheel. We have many chakras in our bodies. But to keep things simple for this post, I’ll focus on the 7 main Chakras, the points where they’re located and what they represent.

So, let’s learn!

Each Chakra has its own color, symbol and representation.

They are located as you see in the image, below, and serve very important purposes. As in a wheel, when they are stuck you may feel stuck, sick, depressed, anxious, lost…the list goes on. The opposite is true when they are spinning freely.

So, let’s dive into the 7 chakras and what they represent or “do”. Please keep in mind that this list is just naming a few of what these chakras represent and what experiences can show up when they are stuck.

7 chakras

The 7 Main Chakras:

Root Chakra (red): This chakra is located at the base of the spine. The Root Chakra governs the auto-immune system and skeletal systems. It represents security, sense of community, family, trust, and value of life. When it is not flowing freely you may feel stuck, insecure, disconnected, or fearful. You may suffer from sciatica, constipation, obesity, or unhealthy relationships.

Sacral Chakra (orange): This chakra is located in the middle region of your lower back. The Sacral Chakra governs the liquid elements of the body: blood, lymph, and urine to name a few. It’s where creativity, confidence, emotional expression, and sexuality lie. When this chakra is not flowing freely you may feel insecure, jealous, sexually stuck, emotional numbness, or depressed.

Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow): This chakra is located in the solar plexus region (between the ribs and belly button). This chakra governs how we digest food and process ideas. It is where our sense of self, self-esteem and will-power is stored. You may need to work on this chakra if you are easily angered, judgmental or resentful. You may procrastinate, have low self-esteem, little stamina or ambition to put ideas into action.

Heart Chakra (green): Located at the heart center, this chakra governs our respiratory and circulatory systems. It can be linked to respiratory issues, heart-related conditions or lung/breast cancer. We find our ability for compassion and love in this chakra. When this chakra is not in balance you may experience grief, heartache, loneliness or difficulty in giving/receiving love.

Throat Chakra (blue): The throat chakra is located at the base of the throat. It governs many areas surrounding the neck including thyroid, esophagus, vocal chords, ears, mouth and cervical spine. Our ability to communicate (verbally and audibly), express ourselves and understand others is held in this chakra. When the throat chakra is not in balance you may experience thyroid issues, hearing issues, eating disorders, speech impediments or may be afraid to speak or speak excessively.

Third Eye Chakra (indigo): You may have heard of this one or have seen images of an eye located in the middle of the forehead. This is your third eye chakra, and it governs the brain. It is where our intuition, concentration, abstract thinking and self-understanding lie. You may need work on this chakra if you suffer from a mental disorder, learning disability, poor vision or headaches.

Crown Chakra (violet): This chakra is located at the crown, or top, of the head. The crown chakra governs our spiritual connection, sense of wonder, mysticism and the realm beyond our physical boundaries. You may need work on this chakra if you are feeling scattered, lack inspiration, suffer from sleep issues, lack of faith or genetic disorders.

Stuck Energy:

We all can have blockages in any, or all, of these chakras at any point in time. Severe blockages usually occur over time. For example, if we have been speaking negatively to ourselves for a good portion of our lives then we may be experiencing some difficulties in an area that the throat chakra governs.

This stagnant, or stuck, energy from our negative belief systems, thought processes and patterns cause the chakras (energy wheels) to not move properly. And, when they don’t flow or move properly, we can experience physical, mental or emotional consequences.

Think of it like a stick caught in your bicycle wheel. Your momentum forward is altered or halted, altogether. Receiving Reiki (energy healing) from a certified Reiki practitioner can restore balance of your chakras and therefore provide relief.

Again, this is a high overview of these 7 chakras. But you can get an idea of how important it is to receive regular Reiki (energy healing) to ensure they are healthy and balanced.
